AIA STANLEY DRAGONBOAT RACES 2007
|
June 19th, 2007 was a perfect day to hold a dragonboat regatta.
It was a bright sunny day with bearable heat and humidity. This
was awesome news for the thousands of spectators and competitors
of the annual Stanley Dragonboat Championships.
This regatta is in it's 40th year and this year saw the largest
ever event with over 200 boats competing for the grand final. Alot
of these teams are corporate teams. Many also invite their friends
to join their boats. Some paddle for fun, some for fitness, and
some paddle to win. Training for some serious teams started as early
as January. Many competitors are seasoned veterans, having paddled
dragonboats for many years.
This year (2007), there were three zones of spectator junks and
yachts which were linked up together bordering the racecourse. To
get to the junks, one had to hop on a large ferry or a small water
taxi.
Once onboard, the party for the spectators begins whilst competitors
tend to stay off the booze until their races are finished.
At the end of the day when your clothes and hair smell like beer,
sweat and sunscreen, the party down on Stanley Main Street goes
on high gear. Watch our 5 minute video to see how we 'unleashed
the dragon' at the Stanely Dragonboat races in 2007!
