GAIA

Imagine sitting outside on a gorgeous terrace under the stars, surrounded by pretty trees and bushes with the tantalising aroma of tomatoes, oregano, olive oil and baking bread on the breeze. Think you’re somewhere in Italy? Think again. You’re at Gaia Ristorante, sitting pretty between Central and the up-and-coming foodie neighbourhood of Sheung Wan, and you’re about to eat some of the best Italian fare Hong Kong has to offer. Whether you’re inside or out (the interior is a funky mix of contrasting fabrics, tiled and wooden floors, lush curtains, a piano and a striking red bar) you’ll feel at home in this classy joint with its casual atmosphere — ideal for a first date or a birthday dinner with friends. The pizzas are legendary and the handmade pasta tossed in a sangiovese-marinated rabbit stew ragout is pretty damn special. The only let downs on the menu are the antipasti grilled assorted vegetables and the seared tuna with black pepper, capers and olives. They just aren’t as exciting as everything else.
