1. My favorite place for art is Sham Shui Po/Mongkok. There are all these crazy street signs, you can drink snake liquor, look at goldfish. Somehow I find the visuals of old Hong Kong inspiring.

There are also camera shops there, vintage old radios and bric a brac stuff you can turn into art. There are places to buy fabric and stuff to make your own jewelry, accessories and clothes. It's a very creative place.

2. My favorite Hong Kong based artists are L1ES One- cause I love the spirit of graffiti and street art. I also recently discovered the DimmSumm.com team. They take photos, make music from street sounds and do amazing paintings which are Hong Kong inspired.

3.Hong Kong seems to be a place to sell art, not create art. Artists need to be more bold and daring and stage more imaginative happenings- protests, interactive exhibits, performance art. The whole city needs a few muses or pioneers to stimulate out-of-the-box thinking

4. Art is important firstly because it's visual. It beautifies a place and delights the eye. It's also important because of the inspiration it gives people. An art piece gives people something to think about, something to react to- interesting art always evokes emotion.

Art is important to HK because it gives us a different perspective and way of considering something we would normally not think about. Art is important because it fosters new thought, diversity and can catalyze understanding where there may have been a void before.

1. What is your favorite place for art in Hong Kong?
Hollywood road & Pottinger Street, where lots of galleries located.

2. Who is your favorite Hong Kong based artist and why?

3. What can we do to improve the art scene in Hong Kong?
Art shouldn't be restricted to a certain place. It can be performed everywhere and in different forms.

4. Why is art relevant/ important to Hong Kong?
It gives taste and inspiration to life.

1. What is your favorite place for art in Hong Kong?

K11 arcade in TST, the environmental design, overall atmosphere and the experience.

Why is art relevant/ important to Hong Kong?

Art is important in Hong Kong as it is a necessary creative outlet and form of expression for people. Especially so in Hong Kong where everything is measured by $, that art gives us perspective and a way to appreciate beauty in creativity and different forms of expression.

I believe it's going to be great

Keeps Hong Kong cosmopolitan

1. What is your favorite place for art in Hong Kong?

Street Art. It can reflect one city's culture. And, it can be a symbol. Different from art in gallery, artists are not restricted by space and place.

1. What is your favorite place for art in Hong Kong? Osage Kwun Tong, and The Artists Cattle Depot Village in Kowloon
(this can be a street, gallery, cafe, neighborhood etc...)

2. Who is your favorite Hong Kong based artist and why? Simon Birch: technically he uses a palette knife like no other Artist i've seen, he captures movement and light in such a dramatic way. This man is revered for his genuine talent as a painter, personally he's been through it and has emerged triumphant! An inspiration in so many ways...

3. What can we do to improve the art scene in Hong Kong? Encourage and nurture it through Schools and HK wide competitions. Re-educate parents who believe that the only 'real' world of work here involves the financial or Industrial sector

4. Why is art relevant/ important to Hong Kong?

“Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”

Steve Jobs quotes (American Entrepreneur Apple co-Founder, b.1955)

We pride ourselves for living in such a dynamic city...therefore we should be forward thinking inhabitants

1. Loving the Hollywood Road/SOHO area for art because there's there's so many galleries in that area & also the occasional installation at Former Married Police Headquarters

2. Favourite HK based artist - Simon Birch for not being afraid to expand the boundaries of HK's art scene - his Hope & Glory project is awesome

3. Provide better support and coverage for artists

4. Art provides an outlet and a form of release away from HK's hectically fast-paced lifestyle - in short, a quick/cheap/easy holiday and one of the most accessible ways to destress and stay sane.

2) The government needs to ensure that art is viewed as a serious subject offered in schools. Encourage people to see art as a means of expression and good for the soul rather just being another investment for the rich.

1. Hollywood Road
2. Simon Birch
3. Space Space Space. Hong Kong needs venues available to artists that allow for installations and large canvas as well as interactive art.

1. Favorite gallery is Opera Gallery. Has gret contemporary art in nice space.

2. Favorite artist is Frances Wong.

3. Improve the scene by having more fairs; outdoor fair w/ local upcoming artists would be great at Peak, or in Victoria Park. There is not enough promoting of local young art.

1. What is your favorite place for art in Hong Kong?
(this can be a street, gallery, cafe, neighborhood etc...)

All the little galleries hidden around central and kowloon industrial estate is v inspiring.

2. Who is your favorite Hong Kong based artist and why?

Simon Birch does some great things with conceptual space.
Really taking it over and pushing the limits and taking us into the metaphysical.

3. What can we do to improve the art scene in Hong Kong?

More are in the public space to draw attention to the fact that there is an active arts scene to the mass population

1. My favorite place for art in HK is Aberdeen street straddling soho/noho. The galleries and cafes there seem to put together great exhibitions featuring diverse works of great currents artists, without it feeling too sterilized or inaccessible.

2. Postumously: Yau Leung - for his amazing eye for beauty and balance while offering strong images to the timeless and evolving social issues and interesting dynamics of Hong Kong.
Living: Simon Birch, because beyond such large conceptual scopes, I feel he is challanging people to question their own definitions of art, while using the opportunities he's been given lately as such a collaborative platform to work with so many other talented individuals.

3. I believe the government could really work hand-in-hand with private ngo foundations to increase the presence of art in public spaces, as well as increasing small grants or bursaries to local artists. Huge endowments are great, but those can focus so singularly on larger projects by fewer artists. There should be more support of the great artists bubbling just below the surface here. (I am not canadian, but Canada's government and their relation to music projects seems like a great example of this.)

1. I love Parasite Art Gallery and Senses 99 because its shows are consistent (ie. Consistent with the themes of art within the realm of urbanism and the city) and its got a very community oriented vibe. Also very underground scene… not too commodified or commercial.

2. Nadim Abbas. Because he’s funny, he’s real. His works are wacky and always tongue in cheek. Even tho he himself takes himself seriously, his art states otherwise.

3. I would love to see more and more underground galleries like parasite and Senses 99 pop up everywhere. Definitely we should attend their openings and go to more shows like this. This would then give HK that arty edge which would then trickle all the way up to the consumer market.

Here is my answer

1. Who is your favorite Hong Kong based artist and why?
Simon Birch coz he's so tall

btw I have to answer only 1 question right?

There should be fun active art auctions of local artists where the money goes towards worthy charities. The art should be priced and sized at an affordable price so that anyone could own a piece of quality local artwork. That way, anyone could participate and appreciate HK art regardless of class, financial level, etc. Killing two birds with one stone- encouraging affordable local art and a charity drive.
