THE NEW WIFE IN TOWN

Usually it’s the husband who breaks the news with enthusiasm: “Honey, I was offered a wonderful promotion! The company will raise my salary; I’ll be promoted to a higher position with more responsibilities; we’ll get some great perks such as a maid, a driver and a huge apartment with a view… we “just” need to move to Hong Kong!” And so it begins. The dreadful move; the saying goodbyes; the questions about what to do when we get there; how will you meet people; what’s this new city like; how can you cope being away from family and friends, amongst other doubts that will permeate your head in the months ahead.

The women who have relocated to HK with their husbands and families are faced with many dilemmas, particularly if they already have a career and a job of their own. There are many points to consider before making a decision to leave one’s life as one knows it and to start anew in a foreign land. Such points are different from couple to couple, however, there is one thing in common: Someone’s gotta give. Usually, it’s the wives.

Once the decision is made and the couple - many times with children - move to the new city, the wife finds herself looking after the well-being of the family and making sure everybody is well adjusted. And then it hits her: What am I going to do next? Some of these women are incredibly accomplished and successful. Living a lifestyle that doesn’t involve work can make them feel empty, and worse, it can push them into a depression. They feel disempowered by the move and by the lack of dynamism in their lives. All of sudden, they are reduced to simply “the wife”, and that’s something they are not used to. A positive side of this process is that many women take this opportunity to rethink their lives and truly explore what they want to do next. Continue with the same career they had previously and look for a job within the same field? Explore new careers and possibilities? Learn a new language or skill they always wanted to learn? Spend more time with their children? Volunteer? Delve into a soul searching journey?

This process can be facilitated by a coach. A well trained life coach helps people become crystal clear about who they are, what they want, and works with them to design a plan of action to get there. As a life coach, I chose to work with women who have relocated to Hong Kong with their husbands and families. I find that most of these women that made a choice to come to Hong Kong are now searching for a new direction. My goal as a coach is that they become empowered and feel ready to take control of their lives and choices. With the help of a coach, they can turn this difficult situation into a great opportunity to explore options to find their true purpose in life.

What Is Coaching?

Coaching is one-on-one guidance and extended support for personal and professional growth and change. It’s not training, it’s not consulting, and it’s definitely not therapy. Rather, coaching clients receive personalized strategies to help them achieve their specific personal and professional goals. The work is ongoing and intensive over several months and it is designed to ensure lasting change and to promote continuous growth.

The Coaching Relationship

Coach U, the world’s leading coaching training institute, defines coaching as "a powerful, collaborative relationship between a coach and a willing individual which enables, through a process of discovery, goal setting, and strategic actions, the realization of extraordinary results. Coaching is also a body of knowledge, a technology, and a style of relating that focuses on the development of human potential."

The definition makes clear that coaching is a relationship and a process, not an event. Its key attributes are:

• Focus on the present
• Personally relevant
• On-going
• Learner-focused
• Action-oriented

In addition there are some key philosophies that guide the coaching process and distinguish quality coaching from training, consulting, managing or directing.

A well-trained coach will:

• Listen and understand without judgment or criticism.
• Ask questions to promote self-discovery.
• Focus on the client's strengths, motivations and needs, to bring out her/his best.
• Help the client find the source of problems before offering solutions that might not be appropriate.
• Honor the truth by communicating all that they sense.
• Display a high level of trust and care for the client.
• Let the client take responsibility for their own results

The word 'coaching' is showing up in human resources budgets and management training sessions all over the world. Coaching is being talked about in career counseling centers, Fortune 500 companies, small businesses and new age gatherings. With this appeal it is no wonder that coaching has quickly become so popular in the United States and Europe and is now spreading to Asia.
