Welcome to the new Hiphongkong.com

It’s a momentous time for me and my humble team here at hiphongkong.com. We’ve been working tedious hours for the past 4 months to bring you one of the most exciting new online publications about Hong Kong and now the new look is finally live!

For those of you who have never visited this website before, or for those who don’t know me personally, hiphongkong.com started out less than two years ago as a hobby. It was a grass-roots webzine about Hong Kong’s art, fashion and party scene which was publicized purely by word of mouth (usually mine).

This project was born from my passion for experiencing every hidden and quirky corner of Hong Kong. It was through my dedication to creating relevant, entertaining and unique content that the site’s fan base grew. I’d have to say though, that the main reason I created this website was out of my passion for people, meeting them, enjoying time with them and bringing them together. Today, connecting people and creating and informing people of enjoyable experiences in Hong Kong this is the main focus of this website.

I would like to thank my team of amazing creators for all their awesome ideas and for their time and dedication. Nothing great is ever achieved by one person alone. It’s always a collaborative effort and I am grateful to have worked with such brilliant minds.

I’d like to thank Toby Johnston from Shift, for the intial design of the website and Zoran Sletivic, his partner for his input into the site architechture.

I’d like to thank my technical developer Ben Holness- who worked with me through the wee hours of the night dealing with back end programming issues. I’d also like to that Phil from Orsa design studio for making invaluable contributions to the programming and for creating the events calendar and the google maps.

Also thanks so much my two brilliant prodigies- Aqua Chiu and Mish for laboring with me for hours over all the drudgery work and for all their inspiring creative input. I really could not have done it without you guys!

Most of all I’d like to thank YOU the readers and supporters for logging onto hiphongkong and for all your feedback and comments. This is more than a website-it’s a creative community of movers and ideas people. We have built this community together. Let’s enjoy the fruits of this collective information, continue to create connect and have fun together in our dynamic city! Hope to see you soon at one of our hip happenings!

Yours truly,
Liza Monica

About Me: I'm a globe-trotting Eurasian girl from New York who speaks several languages and used to be a flight attendant. I lived in the East Village of Manhattan when I was a teen but I also lived on a sailboat in Hawaii for 3 years and in Seoul, South Korea- (of all places) for 5 years!

During my wanderlust years, I did everything from rock climbing in Krabi, trekking in Nepal, diving with the stingrays in Grand Cayman and partying in St. Tropez.

I had no previous training for writing, photography, graphic design marketing or computer skills, but in 2004, I started a blog while living in Korea. It became so popular, I decided to commercialize it and ended up selling it.

While in Korea, I wrote for several publications including the Korea Herald, the Korea Times, Seoul Classified and had my own page of recommendations every month in Dove Travel Magazine.

I also wrote the first ever LUXE City guide for Seoul and did consulting work for several trend-spotting companies like Future Labs in London and Pophouse out of Sydney. I worked as an actress and an MC and appeared in several publications such as Korea Tatler, Prestige Living, W magazine, Madame Figaro, Marie Claire and Joong Ang Ilbo newspaper.

I've been back in Hong Kong for a little over two years now and I absolutely love this city. Hope you will enjoy reading about my adventures in Hong Kong.

Dear Hip HK,

Just wanted to say well done on your site. I am quite new to the site but think it reflects a more realistic, informative and genuine side of HK than say Time Out HK does.

Articles are well written, down to earth, interesting and funny in a 'c'est la vie' kind of way.

Keep up the good work!

All the best,

Mike
