Vintage Love Affair

In London, Paris and in NYC vintage gear is almost always in fashion. People mix vintage pieces with modern trends thereby inventing new styles all the time. After all, what is fashion but a cyclical rehashing of something that's already been done before?
In Hong Kong, people seem more privy to what's new flashy and expensive. Department stalls and malls are all the rage. However, there have been a few super groovy vintage clothing shops popping up recently- is vintage style finally catching on in Hong Kong?
Here's a list of our favorites:
Beatinks
32 Graham Street, Central
2881-7153
An awesome collection of 80's dresses, distressed denim, vintage inspired tops spanning the decades and groovy to the max vintage sunglasses.
Select 18
Shop A, G/F, Grandview Garden, 18 Bridges St., Central, 9310-6168
This really cool shop has fabulous accesories- earrings, necklaces, belts, handbags. They also sell alot of casual clothes.
Vintage HK
Corner of Peel and Hollywood Road
This fairly large shop is owned by the same people as Select 18. They sometimes have really great shoe finds and they sell antique knick-knacks like old fans, telephones and cameras in addtion to bags and clothing.
Retrostone
1/F, 504 Lockhart Rd, Causeway Bay, 2838-6419
B28, Basement, Trendy Zone, Mongkok, 2152-9697
1/F, 23 Granville Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, 2368-8859
While not exactly vintage, many of the little boutiques around Gough, Peel, Elgin, and Staunton Street sell retro and vintage inspired clothing.
Another trend which seems to be gaining popularity recently are clothing swap events where people sell or trade clothes they have pre-loved. Clothing swaps are a great way to recycle and save money (a true indicator of these environmentally aware, financial crisis times)! Check the hiphongkong events calendar for upcoming clothing swap events.

I just bought a flowy hippie-inspired top from Beatniks. I found so many ways to wear it. The sales lady was super helpful and gave me good styling tips and was very honest about what looked good or bad. Plus they are open till 1am!
