Torn Between Two Lovers
Dear Anita,
I have a whopper of a tale to share with you and your readers. You might be tempted to believe that it isn’t true, but it is and for the sake of those involved, I have changed the names, but I promise that this story, full of craziness and stupidity, actually happened.
Once upon a time in a village called Hong Kong, there lived a boy named Jack. He was fortunate enough to be blessed with reasonably good looks and plenty of charm. Having grown up in Hong Kong, he knew plenty of people with whom to go out and party on a Friday night.
On one such weekend night, he met a beautiful lady called Janet and the two of them really hit it off. They hung out in the same circle of friends for several months until one day Jack and Janet found themselves making out in the back of an LKF bar after a few shots of whatever came their way.
For the next several months, Jack and Janet found private time together 'getting busy'- as well as time to spend with their friends chillin’ at their local. They were not overtly flirtatious with each other in public so the only reason that I, your dear narrator, knew that they were hooking up, is that Janet told me in confidence.
Several months into J & J’s affair, Jack met another young lady Lilly, who had just moved to HK and just so happened to be in the same friend group. Being charmed by Lilly, Jack hooked up with her, and as you can imagine, Janet was none too happy. It caused a bit of drama for some time in the circle, however, much to their credit, Jack and Janet managed to work out a deal. They agreed that they were not exclusive, and allowed to date whomever, but for the good of their friendship and the group, they would keep it outside the circle.
Well, that’s a great idea in a bigger pool, but unfortunately here in HK, the waters are shallow and we fish don’t swim far before bumping into each other.
Several months after they worked out their deal, they were each happy doing their own thing most of the time and they got together when time allowed. Jack, by then, had met a gorgeous woman, Celine, with whom he was quite taken. He wanted to get to know her and as she was not within the circle, he thought, why not?
But then, dear readers, something happened which no one could have predicted. Through a mutual friend, that’s right, me, Celine, and Janet met. And they got on. Upon figuring all of this out, I went to Jack to give him fair warning. After all he was my friend too and I would never intentionally get him into trouble. He told me that he had no idea they knew each other but armed with this knowledge, he would not pursue Celine. Perhaps, if he had heeded my warning, and followed through on that, I would not be able to tell you this story, but he didn’t.
A month later Jack decided to throw a massive party and invite everyone he knew. Yes, including both Janet and Celine.
Now, there are so many scenarios where I can imagine that Janet and Celine would end up in the same room and neither of them would end up talking about boys, or in this case just the one boy. But this my friends, is not one of those cases.
In this instance, Janet and Celine did end up talking about boys, this boy, and in so doing, they both discovered that he was dating the other in addition to herself. And, like many modern women, they did not react negatively to the other woman; they both turned on the man.
If all of that was not crazy enough, as the friend of both Janet and Celine, I was lucky enough to receive forwarded messages from both parties that Jack had to sent them. Attempting to maintain my friendship with them, I never told either of them what he was saying to the other but I can now tell all of you that he had almost perfected the art of bullshit.
His lies were so big that they might have blocked celestial bodies from being seen from the ground. He told Janet that he was not interested in Celine. That Celine was chasing him and he could not figure out how to get her to stop.
He told Celine, (who at this point had rightfully told him to shove it) that he missed her. He begged her to have lunch, coffee, anything with him so that he could make it up to her. And he did all of this in the same time period.
My biggest regret is that I never, as his friend, told Jack to seek professional help for his quite obvious pathological lying problem. I chose to stop being his friend instead. Lying of that sort makes me sad and I prefer not to surround myself with people who have a compulsion to spew BS all over.
I have always wondered what Jack was thinking when he invited both of these women to that party. Or what he was thinking when he chose to sleep with Celine’s best friend a week later. Oh wait, that’s another story all together…
