Recycled Fashion

With all the focus on recycling these days, a naturally new trend in Hong Kong is 'eco-chic'. The area around Gough Street in NoHo is a particularly good place to get recycled fashion handbags, soda bottles that are squashed into card holders and even dresses (Okay maybe it's just for display)! The handbags are made with juice box wrappers, candy wrappers, magazine and newspaper. Talk about creative ways to reuse materials!

Check out the shop 'Recycled' at end of Gage street (G/F No. 50 Gage Street) and close to the intersection of Aberdeen street. They sell handbags, clutches and big colorful bags that you could tote around to the beach. These bags are made for export so they are alot cheaper than if you get them abroad. They export their goods to Europe and the bags the sell in the shop are probably overuns.

Another really cool shop is 'Ecols' (8 &10 Gough street). They have high end recyled purses, clutches and bags. They also have neat necklaces made of thin rubber. (When you put it on it looks almost like a henna tattoo) There are loads of other recycled items such as mail holders made with newspaper, art pieces made with rolled up magazine pages, bottle openers and light fixures. They wouldn't let us take photos in there but it's really amazing what kinds of cool things you can make with old magazines!

Another interesting eco-friendly product is the stylish reSackel shopping bag (50 HKD available at Life Cafe in Central). ReSackle uses cool old sacks and makes them into these fashionable reusable shopping bags. Say no to plastic!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the recycled clutch. I bought a very similar clutch and it went perfectly with this silk dress I own. Not only did it funkify the outfit, but it was a great topic of conversation.
