A Little Slice of Wanchai in Lan Kwai Fong

I was laughing at the review that Time Out gave about hiphongkong.com. They called me a “bubbly socialite that knows how to paint the town pink” ummmm.. OK. Hmmmm.. Not sure I’m comfortable with the 'socialite' moniker as I’ve never actually worn a pink frilly outfit, I’m not particularly ‘girly’ nor have I ever danced on a tabletop and been known for nothing except getting my photos in tabloid publications. But whatever- any publicity is better than no publicity!

Attending big social events may seem very frivolous to some, but for me it’s a chance to network and meet people who I may eventually collaborate with. Most of the time it’s not about letting my hair down and partying but about getting the word out about hiphongkong. On occasion, I give the events a miss and just go somewhere purely to release stress and have a laugh.

One of my favorite places to do that it Le Jardin. I can remember a few messy tequila nights there head-banging to Kings of Leon or Vogue-ing to Madonna on the jukebox. The Cavern is also another favorite. It’s a very amusing place in that surreal Wanchai kind of way. First of all, there’s very little chance I will run into anyone I know secondly, there’s always a live band playing cheesy cover music (Perfect for campy dancing and air-guitar) thirdly, it’s actually a really big venue with a huge dance floor and a great layout, Fourthly, it’s a hilarious people-watching spot. I’m always amazed that people don’t even know where it is! But it’s then again it’s the Cavern- not some exclusive member’s only club. The only places worse are in Wanchai like Neptune II or Fenwick’s (rest Fenwick’s seedy soul).

Once inside, the dance floor was pumping with cougars and their tennis instructors, tourists, nerdy guys with glasses and a few of the usual suspects that were too lazy to take a cab to Wanchai. This Filipino homeboy band with backwards baseball caps and tattoos were jamming out R and B covers. I felt I had no choice but to take to the podium and live up to my Paris Hilton reputation. I had a big dinner with loads of wine so I looked at it as a great chance to burn those excess calories! It was so liberating. There wasn’t one person in there that I had to air-kiss or give my name card to. It was pure silly unadulterated good fun.
