A DAY TRIP IN “K TOWN”

Kennedy Town is going totally hip. With so many new bars, cafes and restaurants joining the scene, this traditionally Chinese area is transforming into a trendy, international, old-meets-new neighborhood that attracts expats and young alternative types. If you're sick of Central, why not take a $30HKD taxi ride and hit K town- a place where you won’t bump into someone you know every 2 seconds and you can enjoy being a tourist in a “foreign” place.

BREAKFAST @ THE VILLAGE

Grab a pastry and a coffee in this cute Euro-café to start your day tour. The Italian espresso will wake you up for your adventure in K town. There you can mingle with the locals or get tips on where to go from their friendly “local” staff. From there, you can easily walk to the Harbor front where you can see expat/locals running or walking their dogs, grandmas baby-sitting their grandchildren and university kids hanging out. A nice picturesque scene you don’t normally see in Central!

LUNCH @ LA BAGUETTE

After walking along the seaside, checking out the locals and mingling with the K town residents, you may grab some lunch in "La Baguette". With a name like that, you might think it's a French café but no, it's an Italian place serving up bistro favorites such as pizzas, burgers and pasta. Oh well- one always gets lost in “translation” when you are “traveling”.

The clientele here consists of mostly Kennedy town residents who have made this a regular dining spot or 20 somethings off for a quick lunch. We like their open front facade facing the local residential Tong Lius, semi-operating light-industrial businesses and cha chaan tengs. It's an interesting contrast to this Western restaurant.

SHOPPING @ THE GROCER

The Grocer is a small grocer in Kennedy Town. This cute little place is like a mini City Super carrying a wide range of imported gourmet ingredients. Their specialties include imported dried truffles and local farm milk you can’t get in big chains supermarkets. This is a place where you can get K town souvenirs. With a few alfresco chairs, the place is quite a hot spot for the “K Town” locals to mingle. Make some friends.

DINNER @ KATHMANDU

Kathmandu Cuisine is a cozy little place hidden behind the Belchers serving home-made Nepalese food. This isn’t the poshest place in Hong Kong but this is what Nepalese food fans would be looking for – an unpretentious, authentic place to get good Nepalese food. This down-to-earth vibe is what K town is all about.

@ LIME

We heard this is the best Thai restaurant in (K) town. The menu offers a variety of Thai dishes made from scratch including the familiar spring rolls. Lime is great place to go to if you’re in for a casual, no fuss but quality Thai dining experience. The food is very reasonably priced and each dish is around 30% cheaper than one you order in a Thai restaurant in Central.

FINE DINING @ OONAMI JAPANESE RESTAURANT

You may not know, there are many good Japanese restaurants in K town and dining there is usually half of the price compared to a dinner in Central or Causeway Bay. Our pick for fine dining is Oonami serving up some a range of the regular Japanese dishes like sashimi, udon and tempura.

DRINKS @ THE PIER

The Pier is a gastropub near the Kennedy Town harbor front. The atmosphere there is relaxing and therefore you always see a good mix of locals and expats living in the hood going for some casual drinks. The pub has a long drink list and snack menu. They have a good selection of imported beers but we love their Leffe on the tap the most – this is definitely not a regular option available a bar in Hong Kong.

NIGHT SNACKS @ GA NAM BAKERY

This is an unofficial 24hr bakery that never closes. This is the place some K Town residents visit when they return home from LKF or Wanchai for some breakfast for the next morning (usually without thinking if the buns are going to taste good or not). They sell mostly HK-style buns which are usually too sweet for the expats. However, their plain white bread and (slightly) wheat bread are always fresh. They sell soft drinks and water too – cheaper than those in Club 7-11!
