¡Átame!(Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!) is a 1990 film by Pedro Almodóvar, starring Antonio Banderas and Victoria Abril. One of the most beloved ones of the Spanish master.
The film follows Ricky(Banderas), a young man released from a mental institution, who has been obsessed with Marina(Abril), an actress, and recovering heroin addict. Ricky was orphaned at the age of three, and afterward subjected to the state system of foster-childhood and psychiatric care. He is a wily and ambiguous character with an imbalanced personality. He kidnaps Marina, and admits that his plan is to make her fall in love with him...
Antonio Banderas was truly in his form and height of career when he was cast in Almovodar's Spanish movies. Banderas portrayed innocence and simplicity of character in these early movies that Hollywood always seems to make large and gloss over any sort of character development. There is something that Hollywood seems to drain away and leave behind in the character of people, yet Banderas/Almovodar captured so perfectly the average man/woman and portray them in interesting ways. Almovodar's movies are always filled with quirky characters, funny dialogue and plot twists.
A delicious, cute & touching movie.
