Featuring Hong Kong’s acclaimed jazz talents with premier guitarist Eugene Pao and vocalist Angelita Li, the jazz concert will be on staged on February 6.
Eugene Pao is Hong Kong’s most publicly recognized jazz musician and his name is synonymous with jazz in our city. Such reputation cannot be more deserving as Eugene has been at the vanguard of promoting jazz in the territory through his performances and recordings over the last twenty plus years.
Some of his early recordings featured such legends as bassist Eddie Gomez, blues great Jimmy Witherspoon and saxophonist Michael Brecker. Jazz greats with whom he has performed on stage over the years include Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Terumasa Hino, Freddie Hubbard, Bob Berg , Jackie McClean, Joe Pass, Ulf Wakenius, Ernie Watts, Martin Taylor, James Moody, Bill Bruford, Jeff Berlin, Stu Hamm, Bobby McFerrin, Russell Ferrante, Eric Marienthal and many more.
Over the last two decades, Eugene Pao has truly established himself as Hong Kong’s premier jazz guitarist. He continues to travel the world for performances at international jazz festivals, concert halls and jazz clubs, and to take part in select recording projects.
Angelita Li started her singing career in 1979 at the age of 9, working mainly on television commercials and background vocals. She spent five years in Bangkok in the early 90s developing her music career with various jazz groups. Her music brought her back to Hong Kong in 1996 where she recorded her debut Chinese Jazz album, "Mystery", backe by the territory's top jazz luminaries such as Eugene Pao, Dave Packer, Pau Candaleria, and Anthony Fernandez. In 2002, Angelita was invited by European jazz label Stunt to record her international solo album "Caminhos Cruzados" featuring Grammy Award winner Hans Ulrik. Besides working on other compilation projects and as backing vocals for various canto-pop artists, Angelita has also given lectures and written articles on jazz, and hosts jazz programs on RTHK Radio 4.
