"ALIGHT" - LANTERN FESTIVAL @ SIN SIN FINE ART
Every year on the 15th day of the first lunar month, the Spring Lantern Festival highlights the conclusion of the Chinese New Year Festivities. The day is also known as “Yuan Xiao Festival” in China, as the first lunar month is called “yuan-month” while nighttime is “xiao” in ancient times. There are various beliefs as to the origin of the Lantern Festival, but its significance for sure lies in the celebration and cultivation of positive relationships among people, families and the nature. However, as time goes by, the awareness of this important festival and its traditions have been lost among our generation.
According to Chinese traditions, when a bright full moon hangs in the sky at the very beginning of a new year, there should be thousands of colorful lanterns hung out for people to appreciate. Children would stroll excitedly along the streets holding self-made lanterns; and young people would meet and spend the night together guessing lantern riddles, in hopes of finding love.
This year, Sin Sin brings together 30 local and international artists in continuation of this meaningful tradition of the Chinese. Each artist creates, with his own expressions and interpretations, lanterns which spread the message of good fortune and hope for the new year to come. Chinese sweet delicacies will also be served that night as part of the festival’s traditions.
