WELCOME TO
ART HK 10

ART HK is the leading showcase for international Modern & Contemporary Art in Asia with over 150 galleries participating from 29 different countries.  ART HK reflects Hong Kong’s ‘Gateway’ status in presenting a unique opportunity for collectors to see and buy work of a quality and geographical diversity not available anywhere else in the world.

The Fair is a much needed platform for networking for the international art community bringing together collectors, curators, artists and galleries from Asia and the rest of the world.  ART HK is also a valuable educational resource, vitally important in nurturing the art market in the region for the long term.  Accessibility remains a key priority with introductory guided tours and workshops for aspiring collectors and works available for as little as US$1,000 right through to US$10million.

ART HK has been a catalyst for the cultural scene in Hong Kong and actively involves many of the city’s leading art institutions including Asia Art Archive and Para/Site.  With an extensive programme of talks and satellite events ART HK has become the unmissable forum for cultural debate in Asia.

The leading international art event in Asia will take place from 27-30 May 2010 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). Tickets remain at 2009 prices with buy-one-get-one-free discounts before 15 May through www.hkticketing.com

Now in its third edition, ART HK has affirmed its place as a key fixture on the international art calendar. Each year it attracts the world‟s top artists and gallery directors, along with curators, collectors, critics and art lovers from across Asia and the world.

With the international art market beginning to boom once again, the world‟s strongest galleries are now turning their attention to Hong Kong to present the best ever line up yet to be seen in Asia.

As a financial hub, gateway to the East and a tax-free port, Hong Kong has emerged as Asia‟s primary centre for the buying and selling of art. Four days of cutting edge contemporary art, privileged networking, panel discussions and parties provide an important exchange between East and West, driving the Asia Pacific art market.

This year, ART HK 10 – with the support of new sponsor Deutsche Bank – will welcome more than 150 of the world‟s very best galleries from 29 countries. ART HK 10 will be the ideal crossroads for visitors to buy and invest in art from household names such as Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst and Chinese artist Liu Ye, and to discover emerging artists embarking on their careers.

Leading galleries returning to the Fair include Gagosian Gallery from New York, Beverly Hills, London, Rome & Athens, Lisson Gallery from London, White Cube from London, Hanart TZ Gallery from Hong Kong, SCAI The Bathhouse from Tokyo, Kukje Gallery from Seoul and Eslite Gallery from Taipei.

Exciting new additions to ART HK 10 include Hauser & Wirth from Zurich, London & New York, Galerie Lelong from New York, Paris & Zurich, Emmanuel Perrotin from Paris, Almine Rech Gallery from Brussels, Bernier/Eliades Gallery from Athens, Greenberg Van Doren Gallery, Marianne Boesky Gallery, Sperone Westwater and Lehmann Maupin Gallery from New York, James Cohan Gallery from New York & Shanghai, Long March Space from Beijing, Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery from Sydney and ShugoArts from Tokyo.

The Fair will also feature solo exhibitions from several of the world‟s most respected contemporary artists. Solo presentations include Chinese artists Liu Ye for Sperone Westwater and Qiu Anxiong at Hanart TZ Gallery, Japanese artists Yoshitomo Nara for Marianne Boesky and Aya Takano for Emmanuel Perrotin, and British artists Damien Hirst for White Cube and Jim Lambie for The Modern Institute.

Artworks will range in price from US$1,000 to US$20million, providing the opportunity for both experienced art buyers and those thinking of buying for the first time to participate in ART HK 10.

Michael West, Deutsche Bank‟s Head of Communications for Asia Pacific commented, “ART HK has further enriched an already dynamic and international arts scene in Hong Kong and we are delighted to be the main sponsor.”
Magnus Renfrew, Fair Director added, “There is a great sense of anticipation in the international art community about the latest edition of ART HK. Asia is becoming an increasingly important region for the global art market. With the exceptional line-up of galleries that Fair will be presenting, this year, the eyes of the international art world will be on Hong Kong this May.”

ART HK 10 will see the development of the SCMP | ART FUTURES section, which debuted in 2009 and is dedicated to showcasing the work of emerging artists from new galleries less than five years old. Pilar Corrias Gallery from London and AANDO FINE ART from Berlin are among the featured galleries, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the latest developments in cutting edge global art.

Adding to the inspired atmosphere and exchange are a series of lively discussions, debates and educational events to be held alongside ART HK 10. A highlight will be the Intelligence Squared Asia live debate on the topic You Don’t Need Great Skill to be a Great Artist, taking place on 28 May from 6 to 8pm between Turner Prize winning artist Antony Gormley, art historian Tim Marlow, Director of Exhibitions at White Cube and art critic Hans Ulrich Obrist, co-director of the Serpentine Gallery and the most powerful person in the international art world, according to Art Review magazine, and Sarah Thornton, the best selling author.

A comprehensive talks program, Backroom Conversations with 24 leading panelists from across the art spectrum will be presented by non-profit research centre Asia Art Archive. Discussion topics include: Curators on Japanese Contemporary Art History (27 May); Private Endowments in Contemporary Art (28 May); Artist as Activist, Art as Catalyst (29 May) and Museum Focus: Beyond the White Cube (29 May).
